1999 Duluth St. Louis County Minnesota, USA Obituary: Abraham 'Abe' Kaner, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at
Nopeming Nursing Home in Duluth. He was born in Superior and was a lifelong
resident of the Twin Ports area. Surviving are two sisters, Harriet Davis, Superior, and
Lea Charniss of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his pioneering parents, Rochal
and Samuel H. Kaner, sisters, Bess Pomush and Jeanne Kaner, and three
brothers. He and his brothers, Henry, Isadore and were the original
suppliers of Sundry Products to the Lake Superior freight carriers. 'The
Boys,' as they were called, started out carrying large, canvas pack-sacks on
their shoulders and climbed up ladders to the ships. They graduated to the
"bum boats' and continued to supply the lake carriers until their
retirement. One of the boats that Abe owned once caught on fire, but he was
able to jump ashore after receiving some life-threatening burns. Mr. Kaner's
Duluth real estate enterprise and charitable contributions were noteworthy.
He was a life member of the Superior Hebrew Brotherhood Congregation. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Monday in the
Superior Hebrew Cemetery with Rabbi Shlomo Grafstein of Adas Israel Temple in
Duluth officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of
the donor's choice. Arrangements were handled by Downs Funeral Home. Burial: Hebrew Cemetery Superior Douglas County Wisconsin, USA |
